How to Learn the Port Configuration on Your PC

It is best to have the manual for your PC or the services of a system administrator to analyze your PC to determine how the USB ports and serial ports (if present) are configured. Often the vendor of the PC can advise on how the ports were set up before sale. Failing those things, experimentation is required.

USB Ports

Windows XP
From the Start menu, choose Settings, then Control Panel and double-click System. In the System Properties window, select Hardware and click on Device Manager. Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click on any listed Ports or select Properties to view details about this port.

Windows Vista
From the Start menu, choose Control Panel and from the items presented choose Hardware and Sound. Under the selections for Devices and Printers click on Device Manager. Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click on any listed Ports or select Properties to view details about this port.

Windows 7
From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. If the Control Panel display is set to Category, click on System and Security. In the window displayed select Device Manager located under System. Alternatively, if Control Panel is set to display large or small icons instead of Category view, select System and in the following window choose Device Manager in the upper left corner. Within Device Manager expand the entry for Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click on any listed Ports or select Properties to view details about this port.

Windows 8.1
From Windows Explorer, click Computer tab then choose Open Control Panel. If the Control Panel display is set to Category, click on System and Security. In the window displayed select System then Device Manager from the side bar. Alternatively, if Control Panel is set to display large or small icons instead of Category view, select System and in the following window choose Device Manager in the upper left corner. Within Device Manager expand the entry for Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click on any listed Ports or select Properties to view details about this port.

Windows 10
From Windows Explorer, click Computer tab then choose Manage. From the Computer Management screen, select Device Manager. Within Device Manager expand the entry for Universal Serial Bus controllers, double-click on any listed Ports or select Properties to view details about this port.

 

Serial Ports

Open the Device Manager window as above, per your OS. Under Ports (COM & LPT), double-click on any listed Ports or select Properties to view details about this port.
