Creating a Spline-Bounded Surface

RevWorks creates a spline-bounded surface from a set of digitized 3D points. The spline-bounded surfaces are surface patches whose outside edge is defined by a spline of a specified degree of tightness. These surfaces are smooth, best-fit surfaces over the set of collected data. RevWorks does not compensate surfaces or 3D points even if probe compensation is activated.

To Create a Spline-Bounded Surface

  1. Select an existing plane that approximates the orientation of the surface patch being digitized.

Note: If you do not pre-select a plane DirectSurf attempts to determine the best plane from the actual data collected. This can produce unexpected results if the data you collect is weighted towards one side of the patch rather than being evenly distributed.

  1. From the RevWorks toolbar, select ,
or from the RevWorks toolbar right click on any displayed Surface icon and choose Spline Bound,
    or select
Surface > Spline Bound from the RevWorks menu in SOLIDWORKS.

RevWorks will open a 3D sketch for the points and prompts you to begin digitizing points.

  1. First, as a best practice, digitize the set of points, which represent the bounding spline; then, digitize the other points, which make up the surface.

Note: RevWorks allows you to utilize single point or scan point data collection modes to capture surface data.

  1. Digitize a well-distributed set of points over the entire surface you would like to capture.

Note: The digitized 3D points are shown as they are captured in the SOLIDWORKS 3D sketch.

  1. Once you have collected the surface points, select or another completion option to calculate the feature.

RevWorks generates a spline-bounded surface from the collected data and places it into the SOLIDWORKS model space.
