Using Leap Sets - Using Stations - Leaping to a Station

Leaping to a Station

The action of moving your digitizer from one Station to another is called leaping. In order to leap between two stations the first Station must be active and there must be a common reference associated with the two Stations. If two stations do not share a common reference you are not able to select the second Station as a leap target. When a Station is not available for leaping the radio button beside its name in the alignment document tree is grayed out. If you look at the Stations listed under a Leap Set, all of the Stations that can be reached from the current station have black radio button circles next to them. Those that cannot be reached have grayed radio button circles, indicating that they do not share a Reference with the current Station.

You can add a Reference to a station at any time in order to create a valid relationship for leaping between two Stations. See Linking Stations to a Reference for instructions on how to do this.

Leaping from one Station to another is accomplished by measuring a common Reference and physically moving the digitizer from one Station to the next when prompted.

To Leap to Another Station

  1. Access Alignment Manager

  2. Right click on the current Station.

The Station options pop-up menu displays.

  1. Select Leap To.

A pop-up menu containing a list of the Stations that can be reached from the current Station is displayed.

  1. Select the Station you wish to leap to from the list presented.

A dialog asking if you wish to leap from the current Station to the selected Station displays.

  1. Select OK to start the leaping process.

A dialog asking you to make sure the digitizer is positioned at the initial station and identifying the Reference to be used is presented.

  1. Select OK to start measuring the Station using the identified Reference.

The digitizing process starts.

  1. Digitize Reference data as prompted to complete the measurement.

The initial measurement is stored. A dialog requesting that you position the digitizer at the target Station and identifying the Reference to be used is presented.

  1. Move your digitizer to the physical location of the target Station.

  2. Select OK to continue the leaping process.

The digitizing process starts again.

  1. Digitize reference data as prompted to complete the measurement.

The leap transformation is calculated and stored with the target Station. The target Station becomes the current Station.

Note: If the common Reference being used to leap between stations has already been measured from the current station you do not have to measure it again. In this case you are immediately instructed to move your digitizer to the physical location of the target Station before any measurement takes place and you are only instructed to measure the common Reference once to complete the leap process.

Warning: Each time you leap between stations you add a little bit of error to the overall data collection process. The amount of error depends on the accuracy of your digitizing device. For this reason it is best to minimize the number of Stations and leaps used to collect data.
