About Origins

Origins are alignment objects that partially orient a physical part to the SOLIDWORKS coordinate system. Your digitizing device has its own internal coordinate system also known as the "device coordinate system". Data collected from the part is reported by the digitizing device to RevWorks in device coordinates. Origins instruct RevWorks on how the coordinates gathered from the part must be translated in order to create a relationship between the indicated part origin and the origin of the SOLIDWORKS model space. Coordinates that are translated by the application of an Origin remain in the device coordinate system, but are adjusted so that the specified part origin aligns with the origin in SOLIDWORKS.

Origins are useful in situations where the setup of a digitizing device provides a reference coordinate system that you prefer to use, yet you wish to apply a specific, alternate origin for the data captured. Since Origins do not fully describe the orientation of a part, the translational relationship between the part and digitizer cannot be re-established if the part or digitizer is moved, unlike Datums.

Origins that you define are preserved, along with all other related information, when you choose to save an alignment document.

Warning: If you close the RevWorks toolbar without saving the alignment document, all origin information is discarded if you do not choose to save the document when prompted. By saving the alignment document you preserve the option of reusing Origin definitions.

RevWorks allows you to create two kinds of origins:

  • Point Origin

  • Sphere Origin

From the RevWorks toolbar, you can create an Origin without opening a SOLIDWORKS part, assembly, or drawing window. You do not have to create an Origin in order to digitize a part with RevWorks. In the absence of an active alignment object, RevWorks presents part data in device coordinates.
