Collecting Data in Single Point Mode

Single point mode is the most common method for collecting data in RevWorks. While operating in single point mode, you collect data by pressing the data collection button of your device, an auxiliary switch, or the space bar on your keyboard, once for each point you wish to take. Points features are placed in the active sketch as the data is collected. For 2D sketches, the points you digitize may be any distance from the active sketch plane. When the data is taken, the resulting point is automatically projected perpendicularly to the active sketch. Once completed, the feature created is also placed on the active sketch.

Single point mode is appropriate for both touch and hard probes. You can configure RevWorks to work with either type of probe tip when collecting data in single point mode, limited only by what you digitizer supports. While operating in single point mode, one press of a key or button causes the data for one point to be taken. Data collected in single point mode may be taken at any distance from the current sketch plane, and the data is automatically projected to the sketch plane before the feature or measurement is calculated.

Single point mode is especially well suited for digitizing edge features. For example, you can easily digitize the edges around the face of a cube by first digitizing a face of the cube to create a sketch plane on that face. Then you can define the edges by digitizing line features. To digitize the edges of the cube face, digitize points to make a line along each perpendicular side. Since the edge face is perpendicular to the sketch plane, you can digitize points at any location on the side, close or far from the sketch plane. The points are projected to the sketch plane, and the resulting feature rests at the intersection of the sketch plane and the digitized side. If the sides are not perpendicular, use the feature method for creating a line at the intersection of two planes.

To Collect Data in Single Point Mode

From the RevWorks toolbar, select ,
or select
Collection Mode > Single Point from the RevWorks menu in SOLIDWORKS.

The data collection mode button changes to , the collection mode indicator on the toolbar changes to , and the word SCAN disappears from the toolbar title to indicate that RevWorks is ready to collect data in single point mode.

Note: If the button is displayed on the toolbar, single point mode is already selected.
