Collecting Data in Scan Point Mode

The scan point mode allows you to collect data along any section of a part or freeform in 3D space. While operating in scan point mode, RevWorks collects data when the hard probe crosses the surface of the part, at a distance or time interval, or as streaming data. When capturing data for 2D features, RevWorks automatically takes points where the probe crosses the section plane you defined. This is also referred to as snap scanning. When capturing data for 3D features, including surfaces, data collection may be a constant stream or limited by a time or distance filter .

Scan point mode is only suitable for use with hard probes. When collecting data in scan point mode, make sure that you keep the hard probe in contact with your part surface when dragging it across its surface. Otherwise, RevWorks collects data for points that are not on the surface of your part. You can place scanning on "hold" to move the probe to another location on the part and resume scanning. Use the <Space> bar to enter and leave "hold" status.

Scan point mode is especially suited for digitizing sections through a surface. For example, you can easily digitize the mid-section of an egg shape by first establishing a mid-plane sketch and then collecting data by moving the hard probe tip back and forth in the vicinity of the section. As the probe crosses the sketch plane, RevWorks automatically collects and adds data for the feature. The points are projected to the sketch plane, and the resulting feature rests on the sketch plane you established through the middle of the part. To accomplish this the section plane is given a user configurable thickness.

Scan point mode also complements the RevWorks DirectSurf module. Using this powerful surfacing technology, you can quickly collect data and generate a smooth surface patch. Please review the following topics to learn more about scan mode data collection:

To Collect Data in Scan Point Mode

From the RevWorks toolbar, select ,
or select
Collection Mode > Scan Point from the RevWorks menu in SOLIDWORKS.

The data collection mode button changes to , the collection mode indicator on the toolbar changes to , and the word SCAN appears on the toolbar title to indicate that RevWorks is ready to collect data in scan point mode.

Note: If the button is displayed on the toolbar, scan point mode is already selected.

You can configure scanning the scanning properties. Refer to the topics in the See Also section below for more information..
